Skyrim is an epic adventure – battling dragons, exploring ancient ruins, becoming the ultimate adventurer. But what truly gets players hooked, aside from becoming a stealth archer every single time, are the amazing characters you meet along the way. From your trusty companion to that super annoying dude in Whiterun, these NPCs become a part of your Skyrim experience.
Lydia
The first housecarl you get, Lydia is ready to fight by your side, carry your extra cheese wheels, and occasionally block doorways. Her simple lines became legendary and make her a beloved classic for many.
The Jarl has appointed me to be your housecarl. It’s an honor to serve you.
Serana
A character from the Dawnguard DLC, Serana is surprisingly deep. She’s got witty dialogue, a complicated family history, and actually makes you care about a vampire character.
Turns out you don’t learn much from just sleeping with something
Cicero
Love him or hate him, there’s no denying Cicero is unforgettable. His high-pitched voice, creepy obsession with the Night Mother, and unpredictable antics always make an impression.
Nazeem
The second you arrive in Whiterun, this guy WON’T shut up about how superior he is. His snobby attitude makes him the perfect target for silent frustrations (or maybe the unfortunate “accident” with a stray arrow…)
You don’t get to the cloud district very often, do you?
Heimskr
His booming sermons about Talos get old fast, especially when you’re trying to sneak around Whiterun. Still, he’s an oddly iconic part of the city’s atmosphere.
The Thalmor
Arrogant, powerful, and often out to ruin your day – the Thalmor are easy to despise. That feeling when you finally get to take one down is pure satisfaction.
Barbas
Yes, the Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile’s best friend is a dog. Barbas is hilarious, occasionally annoying, and surprisingly insightful when he’s not begging to play fetch.
Delphine
Sure, she wants to save the world, but her attitude makes you wonder if she’s worse than the dragons. Delphine’s bossiness and suspicion make her a complex (and sometimes begrudgingly respected) character.
So, Why DO We Get So Attached?
It’s more than just their funny lines. Skyrim does a great job of making these characters memorable.
Did Lydia save your life from a troll? Did you help Cicero on his quest? These shared experiences make NPCs feel like more than just quest markers on your map. Each NPC has a distinct personality. How they respond to you or the world around them makes them feel more lifelike. Skyrim occasionally lets you influence an NPC’s fate. These choices stick with you, making their stories even more impactful.
Final Words
There’s no single “most beloved” Skyrim NPC – it’s what makes the game so great! Whether you adore a loyal housecarl, a sassy vampire princess, or a straight-up evil elf, they each add flavor to YOUR unique Skyrim adventure.
So tell me, who are your absolute favorite (and least favorite!) Skyrim characters?
